ONC-ATCB is an organization formed by the National Coordinator of Health Information Technology that is a combination of six companies. These companies were selected to test and provide certifications to EMR software as proof of their authenticity. In this buyer’s guide, we’ll be discussing various features and benefits of an ONC-ATCB certified EMR software.
Here’s what we’ll be discussing in this buyer’s guide:

What is an ONC-ATCB EMR Software?
The ONC-Authorized Testing and Certification Body (ONC-ATCB) is an organization that decides whether an EMR/EHR fell under the criteria for a Meaningful Use (MU) and thus can be considered an effective EMR/EHR software or not. The criteria range from technological requirements, features, potential features, and safety protocols to safeguard patient information.
ONC-ATCB certified EMR/EHR software means that the software would be in accordance with the Meaningful Use act. It also indicates that the software includes safety features and security protocols to make sure your patient information doesn’t go into the wrong hands.
Currently, there are 275 ONC-ATCB certified in-patient medical practice systems along with 500 ambulatory medical practice systems. ONC certifications play a crucial role when it comes to establishing the credibility of an EMR/EHR software within the US market. The whole reason any practice would implement an EHR software in the first place would be to simplify, streamline, and automate their workflows. However, without the ONC-ATCB certification, you’d have to put in some effort to fall under the criteria for the Meaningful Use act.
Due to this, the number of EMR/EHR software that are ONC-ATCB certified is increasing as they continue to apply for certification. This certification can be for either a single EMR module or even a complete suite of EHR systems.
EHR software are designed to focus on getting work done as effectively and efficiently as possible. This is why ONC-ATCB EHR software are designed to improve the efficiency of your clinical workflow. You can also increase collaboration among your staff members and other physicians with effective ONC-ATCB EMR software.
Here, I’ll be going over the various features of an ONC-ATCB EHR along with the requirements of selecting your EHR vendor for your practice.
Before jumping to an EHR software, you must assess the needs, requirements, and capabilities of your practice. After all, an ONC-ATCB certified EHR/EMR software comes in all shapes and sizes. Some practices might require EMR software for large practices based on their size, while others might need small-scale ones.
Here’s all you need to know to make the most of your ONC-ATCB EHR software.
ONC-ATCB EMR Software Features
Before setting your eyes on purchasing an ONC-ATCB certified, make sure your EMR software has certification from at least one of the following companies.
CCHIT – First on our list is Certification Commission for Health Information Technology (CCHIT). This Illinois-based company provides certification for both single modules and a complete EHR solution. However, they stopped issuing new certifications in Jan 2014.
InfoGard - The second company is InfoGard. InfoGard is a California-based company that was given certification right in Sep 2010. Their certifications also include both single modules and complete EHR solutions.
ICSA Labs – The Third company on our list is ICSA Labs. This company is based in Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania, and provides certifications for singular and complete modules of EHR/EMR software.
Drummond Group – The Texas-based company, named Drummond Group was given certification rights in Sep 2010. It provides certifications to single modules of EMR and complete EHR software.
SLI Global Solutions – SLI Global Solutions is a Colorado-based company that was given certification right in Dec 2010. It provides certifications to single modules and completes EHR solutions.
Surescripts – The sixth company, Surescripts, is a Virginia-based company that was given certification rights in 2010. Surescripts certifications include EHR Modules, E-Prescribing, and Information Privacy & Security protocols.
Here are some features of an ONC-ATCB EHR software that help improve patient care, streamline your clinical workflows, and simplify administrative tasks.
Patient Information Safety – An ONC-ATCB EHR software should provide substantial security protocols in order to safeguard your patient information and maintain confidentiality.
E-prescriptions – You should be able to prescribe medicine, sign refill requests, and check patient medicine usage history all in one place.
HIPAA Compliance - An ONC-ATCB EHR software also needs to ensure patient information confidentiality and privacy through compliance with the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) guidelines.
Choosing an ONC-ATCB EMR Vendor
Now that we’ve discussed the necessary features of an ONC-ATCB EHR, let’s talk about some of the requirements you’d need from your EHR vendor. These may differ for each individual medical practice.
Vendor Size – What type of practices does your EHR vendor typically cater to? Some EHR vendors only provide services to small-scale practices, while others cater to large-scale practices. Therefore, if you have a small practice, paying for services that help large practices, won’t do much good. Similarly, large practices won’t be able to function with services designed for small practices.
Design – The design of EHR’s infrastructure depends on your choice. Whether you would prefer a cloud-based, web-based, or even standalone EHR.
Web-based EHR: These companies focus on a web-based approach and practitioners can access their patient information through their web browser.
Stand-alone EHR: Although not quite popular as the others, this EHR is an on-premise EMR that can be accessed remotely through smartphones, iPads, etc. as long as you’re connected to your practice’s network.
Cloud-based EHR: Companies that provide native cloud EHR offer you access to patient information through a cloud-storage.
According to the top reviews, most ONC-ATCB EMR software vendors focus on providing cloud-based healthcare IT services to enhance security and provide seamless services.
