Pros thumbs-up

Oscar is Linux-based and can be accessed from anywhere in the world just like a web server.

Cons thumbs-up

The scheduler is not the most intuitive. For instance, if I search for a name to book an appointment and it's not found, it closes the window. Then, I have to start all over again to book the appointment.

Pros thumbs-up

One of the best features of this software is that it's used across all our departments. This lets us build a large database of services and spot commonalities among them.

Cons thumbs-up

OSCAR isn't designed for dental practices. While creating schedules, profiles, uploading documents, and writing documentation is quite simple, there's no way to link family members together or create charts and draw the necessary odontograms for dental work.

Pros thumbs-up

I was using different software before, and this one works much better for me. My team and I agree that this has been a significant improvement.

Cons thumbs-up

Some of the resulting work ends up being redundant but necessary because there isn't anyone available to rewrite the software (only at a cost).

Pros thumbs-up

I find Oscar to be very intuitive, with its setup and item locations making sense to the average person. The billing features and reports are also quite useful. Plus, the cost is very reasonable.

Cons thumbs-up

Since this is open software, there aren't developers continuously improving it for users, and the interface is somewhat rough. I find it visually unappealing and hard to see everything I need on the screen. Also, it feels cluttered, and more clicks are required to complete tasks than should be necessary, some work becomes redundant but required because there isn't anyone who can rewrite the software (only at a cost).

Pros thumbs-up

Oscar is very easy to use; I was able to learn it in just 3 days. This is great for new hires, as it means we don't waste time on training.

Cons thumbs-up

Oscar only works with Firefox, and we can't upgrade iOS since we use all MACbooks. This slows down our systems.

Pros thumbs-up

OSCAR is a decent EMR with fairly straightforward functionality and convenient access to information. I appreciate that it's web-based with a remote option. However, dealing with the support team, especially Peter Everette, is a significant drawback. Our clinic in New West has had ongoing issues with him. He seems to lack basic customer service skills, being condescending, arrogant, and unwilling to admit mistakes. He often sends me on a wild goose chase before giving an answer and is argumentative when simple issues could be resolved quickly. It's unfortunate that he's so challenging to work with, as both my colleagues and I have had similar experiences.

Cons thumbs-up

Peter Everette is a major drawback of this product or system. When issues arise, he's one of the hardest people to deal with. His lack of courtesy, inability to collaborate, and generally condescending attitude make working with him very challenging. Even though he's the owner, he's the most difficult to deal with compared to others.

Pros thumbs-up

This software is open source and web-based, so it works on any OS platform. Being open source, it's also free! I downloaded it at no cost from the Sourceforge website, and with some basic computer skills, I could unpack it and start using it. There's a lively and engaged community of OSCAR users who connect daily and offer mutual support. Developed by doctors and IT experts at McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada, it's free and continuously evaluated, improved, and updated. I'm using version 12. It's a well-developed, mature software that's widely used globally. With its open-source nature, I'm not at the mercy of a developer or service provider who might take advantage of my dependency. If I'm not happy with my OSCAR service provider or their fees, I can switch providers easily. My experience with my current provider has been extremely positive, with low monthly support fees and responsive service. Although we don't endorse one provider over another, getting recommendations from other users is a good idea. Since it's web-based, I can access my EMR from anywhere in the world, but that doesn't mean it's insecure. My server is well-protected against hackers, and patient confidentiality is a major focus in our discussions. For patients who need access to their records while traveling, there's the MyOSCAR program. If I choose, I can control how much access my patients have through MyOSCAR. Most of the over 2000 users are Canadian, but we also have users from around the globe. For more info, visit: https://oscar-emr.com/ Chris.

Cons thumbs-up

It feels cluttered and there are more clicks needed to finish a task than really needed.
