The Veterans Information Systems and Technology Architecture EHR, commonly known as VistA EHR is a software which in the US Department of Veterans Affairs, handles a wide network of more than 8 million veteran’s records. It also caters to the administrative, clinical, and financial needs of 1800 medical facilities of the VHA. The medical facilities range from small clinics to large hospitals with a large number of patients and a number of specialties that those medical facilities cater to.
VistA healthcare software helps in streamlining workflows by making decision making easy, fast, and more efficient in clinics. The software is also used in ambulatory services, hospitals, and other medical facilities as the platform provides support to the HL7 standards for HIE (health information exchange). VistA EHR software consists of a number of useful features such as modules for CPOE, laboratory tests, E-prescriptions, patient care diet orders, MRIs, and other clinical documentation. VA healthcare is free of cost for veterans hence the VistA healthcare software does not come with a billing module.
It is currently available for download on the VA’s website. There are also a number of communities further developing VistA separately from the VA, the most famous one being OSHERA.
