Pros ![]()
For my primary care practice this EMR works well, satisfying the essential needs of PCP workflows, yet it provides little beyond those basic capabilities.
Cons ![]()
My experience has been that they take an inordinate amount of time to resolve problems, if those problems are fixable at all, after signing up for their billing service I quickly found it to be an utter waste of time because their so-called 'billing experts' lack real-world experience with billing for specialties outside of primary care. We requested a change of representative multiple times which they refuse to accommodate and the account managers we were assigned mostly provide lip service rather than substantive help so continuing with them has felt like throwing away both time and money. I advise practices to find an EMR vendor that truly understands your specialty and to apply the same standard when choosing a billing partner because their patient follow-up tools are underwhelming and their extra 'bells and whistles' offer little practical value. Although the system can generate hundreds of reports, when the software fails to assist in clinical diagnosis or treatment decisions, or in securing reimbursement, those reports are essentially meaningless. I am currently in the process of terminating our relationship with this company and I recommend that you avoid starting one, or else move on without delay.

I genuinely appreciate Athena, I find it easy to access billing and messages and being able to converse with providers within the platform is convenient, while the app also offers numerous useful features that enhance my experience.
Cons ![]()
For the most part I'm happy with Athena, however, what bothers me is the fact that other clinicians without access are unable to view results, billing records or related information which can be quite disruptive especially since the system hasn't been adopted universally yet.
Pros ![]()
What I like most is the online portal as a means of communication because it's extremely convenient to be able to message my healthcare provider directly whenever I need to.
Cons ![]()
When I attempt to read my appointment notes on my mobile device, the interface won't let me scroll horizontally so I end up having to rotate the screen to see the entire content which is frustrating.
Pros ![]()
I find the EMR exceptionally simple to operate when managing numerous patients and because it scales well for small to mid-sized practices, I'm able to access and work on several patient records concurrently without getting overwhelmed.
Cons ![]()
For me it has run satisfactorily with no major issues to date although I have noticed that it demands a relatively powerful computer to perform smoothly and on older PCs the application can become unresponsive or freeze.
Pros ![]()
Having multiple categories displayed directly on the home page makes it extremely convenient for me to access and locate what I need without extra navigation.
Cons ![]()
When I'm navigating through the medical records pages, the back button's purpose and behavior aren't clear and more often than not I end up back at the home page.
Pros ![]()
I like how organized and time-saving the software feels in everyday use since it lets me navigate tasks quickly and with minimal friction using it, I can check in for my medical visits, arrange future appointments and access customer support whenever I come across clinical or non-clinical concerns.
Cons ![]()
I come across no issues with athenaOne at all because the application reliably addresses every question, concern and need I raise and I would be happy to keep using the service going forward.
Pros ![]()
I genuinely like that there is a dedicated portal where I can view my personal records, check lab and test results, see upcoming appointments on my schedule and even send messages directly to my provider which makes managing my care more convenient overall.
Cons ![]()
There are quite a few issues I've experienced so because space is limited I'll summarize: fundamentally the portal is painfully slow and frequently glitchy, forcing me to refresh pages over and over and making even basic tasks take far longer than they should, this happens regardless of which provider I'm using it with, what Wi-Fi network I'm on, or which device or computer I try so it doesn't seem to be an isolated connectivity issue. It gives the strong impression of being the same generic platform used by a massive medical center which I can understand for hospitals but not for my primary care and psychiatrist where a more personalized experience would be appropriate and using this system makes those relationships feel impersonal as if I'm merely a record in a huge database rather than a person whose caregivers know deeply private, ongoing details about my life. The canned "pop-up" replies the automatic "please allow 48 hours for a response" type messages feel like they were set by the practice and, rather than reassuring, only reinforce that cold, distant dynamic, they read to me as if the message really means "There are hundreds of other patient messages ahead of yours that an hourly staffer may or may not get to," which comes across as minimizing and belittling and ultimately strengthens the sense that my doctors aren't inclined to communicate with patients directly or promptly.
Pros ![]()
For me having an online portal for patients is exceptionally convenient, I also find that submission messages are delivered instantly and the bright, vibrant color palette is particularly eye-catching.
Cons ![]()
I found that learning to move between the various sections is initially disorienting, yet after I became accustomed to the layout, I discovered it to be quite simple and easy to use.
Pros ![]()
I'm fond of how easy it is to configure and make it my own since getting started with this program was indeed remarkably simple.
Cons ![]()
Personally I prefer membership and pricing to reflect each person's requests, rather than charging a single, general flat price.
Pros ![]()
It is extremely efficient and well-organized and I find it particularly easy to move smoothly between the appointment scheduling interface and a patient's chart while managing daily tasks.
Cons ![]()
I don't come across many drawbacks with the athenaOne platform but I have had occasions when securing authorization for smaller, less widely recognized insurance carriers proved challenging and required extra time and follow-up.
